Shopping for a used one-ton diesel truck is a little different from simply asking which diesel engine is best.

At this level, the truck itself matters just as much as the badge on the engine. A Ford Super Duty F-350 or F-450, Ram 3500, Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD, and GMC Sierra 3500HD can all be excellent heavy-duty trucks, but they do not necessarily make sense for the same buyer.

The better question is: What do you need the truck to do, and which used one-ton platform gives you the best combination of configuration, condition, model-year risk, capability, and ownership requirements?
